Privacy policy

Last updated 19 September 2026

This explains what personal information we collect when you use this site, why, who we share it with, and your rights under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

Who is responsible for your data

Mark Bennet, trading as KnivesUK, 15 Central Wall, Canvey Island, Essex, SS8 9UU · admin@knives-uk.com

We are the “controller” of the personal data described below.

What we collect and why

  • Orders: your name, email, phone number, delivery address and what you bought — to take payment, pack and deliver your order, send confirmations and tracking, and handle returns. Legal basis: performing the contract with you.
  • Your account (optional): your name and email, and your sign-in details (managed by our authentication provider; we never see your password), plus your order history and saved basket. Legal basis: performing the contract, and our legitimate interest in running accounts you ask for.
  • Age and identity verification: selling bladed items to under-18s is illegal, so we must verify your age. You verify through our provider Veriff, which scans your ID document. Veriff processes your ID images and personal details under its own privacy notice. We do not receive or store your ID images. We keep only a record that you passed: the Veriff session reference, the date and time, the document type (e.g. passport) and the over-18 result. Legal basis: legal obligation (age-restricted sales law).
  • Payments: handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We receive confirmation of payment and the name, email, phone and address you enter there.
  • Enquiries: anything you send us through forms or email, to reply to you.

How long we keep it

  • Age-verification record on your account: 90 days, so you don't have to repeat the check on repeat orders. After that you'll be asked to verify again. The verification details on each past order (session reference, date, method) are kept with that order as our legal audit record.
  • Order records: normally 6 years, as required for accounting and tax purposes.
  • Accounts: until you ask us to delete them (see your rights below).

Who we share it with

Only the service providers we need to run the shop, each acting on our instructions:

  • Veriff (identity verification)
  • Stripe (payments)
  • Royal Mail and Parcelforce (delivery — your name, address, phone and email)
  • Supabase (our database and sign-in) and Netlify (website hosting)
  • Resend (sending order and account emails)
  • Google, only if you choose “Continue with Google” to sign in

Where the law requires it — for example, reporting certain large bladed-item orders to the police — we will share the information the law asks for. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.

Cookies and similar storage

We only use storage that the site needs to work: a sign-in session cookie if you have an account, a short-lived cookie that remembers your age check while you finish checkout, and your basket and light/dark preference saved in your browser. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies, so there is no cookie banner. If we add analytics later, we will update this page and ask for your consent first.

Your rights

You can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it (where we don't have to keep it by law), restrict or object to how we use it, or move it elsewhere. To do any of these, email admin@knives-uk.com. We'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If we change how we use your data we'll update this page and the date at the top.
